LABOUR LAWS UNDER REVIEW Public Invited To Island-wide Meetings

For the first time the people of the island are being given an opportunity to join the Government in reviewing a set of labour legislation which has been consolidated into one document called The Anguilla Labour Code.

A release issued by Labour Commissioner, Evalie Bradley, stated that the legislation in question comprises The Labour Department Act; The Control of Employment Act; The Fair Labour Standards Act; and The Work Permit Regulations.

A series of island-wide consultative meetings have been arranged in an effort to have all civic-minded Anguillians participate and contribute to the final draft. Mrs. Bradley explained that this opportunity is being afforded to the people of the island given the national importance of the legislation to the socio-economic development of Anguilla.

The first meeting will be held at the Island Harbour Primary School on Tuesday April 8. The other meetings will be held as follows: East End Primary School Thursday April 10; West End Primary School Tuesday April 22; and the Bethel Methodist Church Thursday April 24.

The meetings will begin at 7.00 p.m. The facilitators will be Permanent Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office, Rodney Rey; Legal Draftsperson/Crown Counsel in the Attorney General’s Chambers, Arjul Wilson; and Labour Commissioner, Evalie Bradley.

Members of the general public are being urged to take advantage of this opportunity to attend these meetings in the various districts and to contribute to the very important process of developing the island’s Labour legislation.

In addition all interest groups, Non-Governmental Organisations, Church organisations and others desirous to have such consultative sessions, should contact the Labour Commissioner.
