UN COMMITTEE TO MEET IN ANGUILLA

The Chief Minister’s Office has announced that the Annual Conference of the United Nations Special Committee of 24 on Decolonization is to be held in Anguilla from May 21-23.

This is the first time ever that the Decolonization Committee of 24 will be holding its annual meeting in a non self governing territory. Delegates and participants from British, Dutch, French, and American territories all over the globe will be represented at the conference. At these meetings the committee hears statements, from elected and appointed representatives of the territories as well as from petitioners and NGO’s. It also examines the assistance the specialized agencies of the UN provide or could provide to the territories.

Commenting on the upcoming event Chairman of the Constitutional and Electoral Reform Committee, Mr. David Carty said that an enormous opportunity was now being afforded to all Anguillians who were interested and concerned about the issues of constitutional reform to learn from and share ideas with citizens of other non self governing territories around the world. The issues of status, good government, and constitutional modernization which will be under discussion at the seminar could and should help to enable and empower Anguillians to focus more clearly not only on the issues of constitutional reform but on the very future of the Anguillian society, the body politic and our place in the world. He said that he hoped that Anguillians would not only learn from the seminar but seize the opportunity to share with the visiting delegates to the seminar our own goals and aspirations for the future.

He also remarked that the upcoming calypso competition which will be held within days of the decolonization seminar should help to give added impetus to the issues of constitutional and electoral reform which are so necessary for the continued growth and stability of our island home.
