POLICE AND MAGISTRATE'S COURT REPORTS


Police

Eleven crimes were reported for the period August 11th to 18th. There were four burglaries, one at Sandy Ground and three at South Hill. Items stolen in these burglaries included a stove, DVD player, CDs, kitchen utensils, cases of beers and Guinness, bottles of alcohol, a laptop computer and cash.

There were also four thefts in the areas of White Hill, Blowing Point, The Valley and South Hill. Items stolen included bags of grass, gasoline, power drill, car keys and a cell phone. Two robberies were committed both in Shoal Bay.

During this period, six arrests were made: one male on suspicion of possession of a firearm, two males on suspicion of robbery, one male for possession of cannabis, one male for driving under the influence of alcohol and one male to prevent a breach of the peace.

There were two minor accidents during this same period.

On Thursday August 12th, at about 9:45 pm, Police responded to a report of a robbery at Shoal Bay (East). On arrival it was reported that four masked men, brandishing firearms, demanded money from the Madeariman and KU Restaurants and their guests. The Police reported that the amount of cash stolen from the restaurants and their patrons totaled about US$2,500.00. While no acts of violence accompanied the robberies, guests and staff alike were terrified over the experience. Two persons were arrested on suspicion and later released pending further inquiries. Inspector Paul Sinclair said that this sinister crime has attracted the attention of all the departments of the Royal Anguilla Police Force. He went on: “The Criminal Investigation Department as well as the Drugs and Firearms Task Force are pursuing positive lines of inquiry and are confident that they will catch the parties responsible for this criminal act”. He appealed to the general public, and to business owners, to remain vigilant and mindful when leaving their premises alone and carrying cash of any kind. He also appealed to anyone having any information about these robberies to contact the Criminal Investigation Department or any Police Officer of their choice.

Magistrate's Court

On August 11th Tyrone Reid of Blowing Point pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention and was fined $3000.00. On the same day, Kurt Hodge of Statia Valley was found guilty of being armed with an offensive weapon, criminal damage and three counts of assault. He was bound over to keep the peace for two years for criminal damage. He was fined $500.00 on assaults one and two respectively, and fined an additional $800.00 on assault three. Mr. Hodge was sentenced to four months in prison for being armed with an offensive weapon.

On August 12th, Raymond Edwards of Sandy Ground pleaded guilty to driving an unlicensed vehicle and was fined $1,800.00. He was fined an additional $6,000.00 for driving without insurance.

On the same day Lesley Richardson pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and was fined $3,500.00.
