Anguillian Student Graduated From

On June 11th, 2010, Amalia Watty daughter of Bernice and Dorren (Glen) Watty of Rey Hill, graduated from Monroe College where she proudly walked the stage at the famed Madison Square Garden in New York City. Amalia completed just one implausible milestone of her life by achieving Cum Laude (second highest honors) and receiving her Honors Bachelor of Business Arts Degree in Hospitality Management with a concentration in Marketing.

Amalia was always a very ambitious young lady who felt that each individual was born with a different purpose in life and should therefore never strive to mimic another; instead each should strive to accomplish his/her purpose by completing his/her mission, and what better way to do this is by being proactive and taking the initiative to ensuring that one’s goals are met and success is achieved.
In 2007, Amalia started off as an online student at Monroe College and in September 2008 she was enrolled full-time and inducted into the Honors Program at Monroe College where she became an academically accomplished student, given the opportunity to engage herself in advanced studies and participate in enhanced scholarly experiences. From that day onward, Amalia continued to maintain her status of being a President’s list Graduate. She is currently working with the Anguilla Tourist Board in White Plains, New York.
Ms. Watty would like to give her utmost thanks to the Almighty God, for without His guidance and strength, these accomplishments would not be possible. She conveys an immense amount of gratitude and appreciation to the Government of Anguilla for making this journey remarkably possible and expresses great thanks to her mom and “best friend” Bernice Watty, family, friends and loved-ones as well as her mentor Mr. Emerson Philips (Director, International Student Services at Monroe College), not forgetting the teachers at the A.L.H.C.S, especially her Geography teacher Mrs. Michelle Carty. Because of these persons she came to realise that her challenges were not to be perceived as threats but instead as opportunities for growth that would make her stronger; with that she now views experience as the most effective teacher of all time. Last but not least, Amalia expresses gratefulness to her current boss Marie Walker (Director of the North America ATB) for taking her under her wings and teaching her everything needed in the industry, helping to groom her into the person she is today.
Amalia anticipates starting another new chapter in hopes of accomplishing a Bachelor in Marketing. She would like to encourage the young people of Anguilla to continue striving for what they believe in, to set goals and objectives and aim for excellence. When asked what advice she would like to give to the students at A.L.H.C.S she responded, “When you are confronted with challenges, embrace them cautiously, learn from them, bounce back and move on. The more time and energy invested into the necessary aspects of your life and most importantly into your education, the stronger you will become and the likelihood of success will be elevated”.
