SPORTS: 9th Annual Fitness Competition Held, 18 Athletes Participated


On Saturday 03rd July 2010, in front of a large and appreciative audience, 10 female and 8 male athletes under the direction of the Anguilla Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (ABFF) took part in the 9th annual Mr. and Miss Anguilla Bodybuilding and Body Fitness competition, at the Rodney McAurthur Rey Auditorium (Campus B) in The Valley.


Overall 2010 winners are Alphonsene Williams “ MS Fitness Anguilla” and Vernon ‘Tweedy’ Carty Mr. Anguilla

The male athletes were Desmond Paul (defending Mr. Anguilla for 2009), Verdine Connor, Duquaine Brooks, Vernon Carty, Horace Edwards, Michael Connor, Gregory Permuy and Kendal Hughes. And the female athletes were Alphonsene Williams (Ms Fitness 2009), Roxann Pinnock, Janique Payne, Karema Gumbs, Tiffany Matthews, Rodi Richardson, Kerina Hughes, Deidra Bell, Jessica Cognette and Joyah Gumbs.

There were five categories in which the athletes competed: Female Fitness Figure: Middle and Tall Class. MEN: Novice; up to 180 lbs; and over 180 lbs.

The results were as follows:

Female Fitness Figure – Tall Class:
1st place: Alphransene Williams
2nd place: Roxann Pinonck
3rd place: Joyah Gumbs

Female Fitness Figure – Medium Class:
1st place: Deidra Bell
2nd place: Janique Payne
3rd place: Kerina Hughes

Male Novice (beginners)
1st place: Horace Edwards
2nd place: Duquaine Brooks
3rd place: Gregory Permuy
Male Up to 180 lbs
1st place: Mikey Connor
2nd place: Duquaine Brooks
3rd place: Gregory Vidal Permuy

Male Over 180 lbs
1st place: Vernon Carty
2nd place: Verdine Connor
3rd place: Desmond Paul

Overall winners for the 2010 show were: Female: Alphonsene Williams "Ms Fitness Anguilla”, Male: Vernon ‘Tweedy’ Carty "Mr. Anguilla". Most improved athlete: Mikey Connor and Best Poser: Verdine Connor.

The Judges were Christine Williams of St. Maarten - Head Judge, who is the Executive Assistant of the International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB); Cecil Lake and Francis Peterson (St Maarten); Cleo Cach (St. Martin); and Cardigan Connor and Peter Valilis (Anguilla). Margie Hodge, the second local female judge, who for the first time did her test paper as a judge, came in for high praise for her effort by the visiting IFBB approved judges.

The Anguilla Amateur Bodybuilding Federation is now preparing to take a team of athletes to Aruba in October 2010 to compete in the Central American Championship (CAC). Its goal to field a full team for this championship and we do hope that we can continue to garner the full support of the public and private sector in aiding us to achieve this objective.

The Anguilla Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation would like to congratulate all of the athletes, who participated in the 2010 show, for their splendid and outstanding performance. Special kudos to all who participated for the first time.
