Mr. Romney observed that it was important to build healthy bodies and minds through sports, and that LIME was delighted to be involved in assisting the organisers of the two sporting events. He said cycling had emerged as a big sport in Anguilla and that the John T. Memorial Race was now considered to be one of the biggest in the region. “It is very comforting that we in Anguilla have been able to attract such an event,” Mr. Romney stated. “LIME has been associated with the John T. Memorial Race for the last seven years now, and we are really proud of the accomplishments of the Cycling Association. A lot of work to put on such an event and year by year we see it growing from strength to strength.”
The LIME Country Manager described John T. as the pioneer of cycling in Anguilla. He hoped that the company’s sponsorship would go a long way towards funding the race.
George Lake, President of the Anguilla Cycling Association, thanked LIME for its sponsorship and for enabling the sporting body to become known in the Caribbean for its hospitality and organisational skills.
Mr. Lake informed the press that some fifty cyclists would be coming to Anguilla from all the Leeward and Windward Islands, the Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic and, for the first time, from Aruba and Puerto Rico.
Last year’s overall winner was a national from Guadeloupe.
Lake said that the money from LIME would cover the prizes from first to fifth place as well as the consolation prizes for the other positions in the race.
The cyclists, between the ages of 13 and 16 will be riding on Saturday, July 17 along with cyclists over the ages of 35-40, called the “A-Plus” riders. The juniors between the ages of 16 and 18 will be riding on Sunday, July 18.
The main race is 150 kilometers and is usually completed in three and a half hours.
Mr. Romney was also pleased that LIME had now become involved in the sponsorship of the Body Building Association for the first time. He added that LIME was again looking at the overall fitness of persons in Anguilla and earlier in the year had also sponsored the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School’s Annual Track Meet.
Joseph Pradel of the Body Building Association accepted the sponsorship cheque from LIME. He explained that the US$1,000 would be used to purchase trophies and to assist in a small way with bringing in the judges for the local body-building competition.
He was pleased to report that the Association’s body-building Competitors returned to Anguilla last weekend from St. Maarten where they won the overall competition.
