Probation And You: Experiences Of Past Adult Probationers

Articles for the month of June focused on the Adult Probation Section of the Department. It is important to end our month by giving a few of our past clients an opportunity to share their experiences with the community. These clients were asked to write briefly about their experiences whilst on Probation. Did Probation help them and if so in what way? What challenges did they face? And what could the Department do differently to improve the services offered? Submissions were not altered and names are only given by clients who chose to publish their names.

Experience 1

I was given the opportunity to share with everyone what Probation has done for me. Like any other institution, Probation has its ups and downs but my encounter is one that made me a changed person today. I’m very proud to say that the staff from the Probation Department are willing and concerned about people who need help and their doors are always open whenever Probationers need someone to talk to. Yes, I know to some of us relating to someone about problems/mishaps can be difficult, but you must remember that only you can stop yourself from reaching your goals in life. Since being on Probation I’ve found perseverance and purposefulness in life. I take one step at a time with a clear vision of what I want to accomplish. I’m very proud to say a special thanks to Miss Brooks and the staff of the Probation Department for standing by me, believing in me and helping me to gain my life back. You guys are doing a well job. Experience 2

My probation experience was one to learn from and it helped me to understand that not everything that comes to our mind to do is right and that every action has a reaction or as I learnt a consequence. Probation also helped me to decipher the pros and cons of my decision making. My probation was a learning experience and I'm glad that I took the time out to attend my sessions when I had to. Experience 3

Department of Probation - a way of life, healthy and inspiring. Being under the umbrella of Probation you would not get wet with the showers of troubles. The Department helped me by requiring me to attend Alcohol Anonymous meetings. I have been sober now for 2 years and 5 months. Counselling provided in Anger Management and Decision making has helped me to completely change the way I handle certain situations and I now make positive decisions. My life is more fulfilling. The staff is great people to work with. I would not change anything as I think the Department is doing an excellent job. I think the Department should have me as a basic counselor of AA and as a guest speaker to relate my story and experiences to other Probationers. If Probation can help me I think it can help others. Next month’s articles will focus on the Community Services Section of the Department.
