Men's First Health Programme For Prisoners Completed |
| Publishing date: 11.06.2010 12:01 |
A group of prisoners at HM Prison have completed a 20-week Men’s Health Programme at HM Prison. The programme was initiated in January 2010, and consisted of a weekly seminar on a significant health topic delivered by a variety of health professionals. The purpose of the programme was for the prisoners to be educated about the holistic meaning of health and become more conscious of health issues as they relate to their physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

Rehabilitation and Development Coordinator, Ms Shariffa Wallace, said that the prisoners have limited access to information of this nature and the programme had afforded an otherwise uninformed population of some fundamental aspects of preserving both their own health and wellbeing and that of others. The programme has helped to educate the prisoners in recognising the importance of maintaining good health as well as the consequences of not doing so.
Ms Wallace said that she welcomed the combined contribution of the health professionals who work within both the Health Authority of Anguilla and the private sector, in delivering the programme. She had always envisaged that the programme would offer a comprehensive overview of men’s health and would stimulate interest amongst the prison population about what it means to have a healthy lifestyle. Ms Wallace also said that she was extremely pleased with the participation of those prisoners who enrolled in the programme, as were the facilitators who enjoyed the experience of being able to share their knowledge within the prison and commented favourably about the positive experience they had with the prisoners each week.
HM Prison wishes to thanks all of the facilitators who volunteered their time to deliver the Men’s Health Programme: Dr Lowell Hughes, Dr Clyde Bryan, Dr Lindell Brooks, Dr Louis Bardfield, Nurse Lynette Rogers, Nurse Monique Rey, Nurse Diana Claxton-Carty, Mrs Civilla Kentish, Mrs Gillian Wallace, Mr Steve MacDowall, Ms Karen Richardson, Mrs Vivian Masshardt, Miss Khalida Banks, Mrs Bernice Battick, Mrs Jennifer Gumbs, Mr Peter Vasilis and Miss Everett Duncan.
The Prison Department looks forward to the continued involvement and cooperation of all the aforementioned health professionals and also any others who may wish to contribute to the delivery of the Men’s Health programme when it is offered again later this year.
