Nigel Linton said, at the short opening ceremony, that the competition started following the first primary school competition held three years ago. It was at that time that netball was introduced to those schools by Lisa James, a coach brought to Anguilla by the Sports Department.
Mr. Linton was very happy to see that many of the children who entered the comprehensive school had continued playing netball and that a number of players from the primary schools would be joining them in September this year. He hoped that later on it would be possible to have inter-house matches at both junior and senior levels.
President of the Anguilla Amateur Netball Association, Nadia Linton, said the young players started under her leadership in 2006 and she was pleased that a number of them were still involved in the sport. “Netball is something that will help you build character, self-confidence, teach you how to be a team player and in decision-making,” she told the students. She emphasised the need for players to respect each other, to be well-disciplined and to play hard in order to achieve success.
At present, there is no sponsor for the competition, something which the school would welcome.
