Anguilla Hosts OECS Bridge Championship


Last weekend more than fifty bridge enthusiasts met in Anguilla for the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Annual Bridge Championships. In addition to the OECS countries, there were representatives from Guadeloupe, Martinique, and St Barths for the Open Tournament. St Lucia emerged the winners for the second consecutive year. The event was held at the Malliouhana Conference Room and many of the visitors stayed at the hotel.

Friday evening’s tournament was for pairs and 34 pairs took part. The Anguilla team of Carol Baines and Gary Holmes took the top prize. On Saturday the National Teams and Open Teams competed. The overall winner of the National Teams was St Lucia with Dominica in second place and Anguilla (with its team comprising Alan Gumbs, Roy Horsford, Carol Baines and Gary Holmes) in third place.

In the Open Teams Tournament, the team from Guadeloupe were the winners, with St Barths second and Martinique/French Guyana third. In the Swiss Teams Tournament on Sunday morning the winners were a team from Martinique and French Guyana with Martinique second and Antigua third.

President of the Anguilla Bridge Association, Alan Gumbs, chaired the closing and prize giving ceremony on Sunday. He suggested that bridge must be extended to younger players and thanked Jackie Thompson for initiating a programme for schools in Anguilla. He thanked all the players for their participation and gave special thanks to Ian Slack from St Kitts, Al James from Antigua and Jean Yves Dabreteau from Martinique for all their support.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Infrastructure, Larry Franklin, on behalf of the Ministry of Sports, thanked all the visitors to the island saying that he hoped they had enjoyed the beaches, cuisine and hospitality and he encouraged them all to return to the island for restful holiday. He was pleased to note of the plans to get young players interested in the game.

Henry Volney from Dominica invited all the players to the next tournament in 2011 which his association will be hosting.

Una Gumbs thanked the many sponsors and persons who helped make the weekend the success that it was. The major sponsors were Nagico and the Government of Anguilla.
