The newly-formed AXA United Cycling Club, which embodies riders from Blowing Point and other parts of the island, has high hopes in developing itself into one of the most competitive emerging team of cyclists in Anguilla. This is according to its president, Sylvester Parris, who led his 16 members to the Jamida Bicycle Race at Island Harbour on Sunday, April 25.

“We include young riders from Blowing Point, South Hill, Stoney Ground and Little Dix and other villages. We have an organising body of five and sixteen cyclists comprising juniors, seniors and some A-plus. I am the President and our Vice Presidents Mr. Robin Ricketts of Ricketts & Associates and Andrew Reece, one of the cyclists, is our captain,” Sylvester told The Anguillian.
“The records show that Reece made places in the John T. Memorial Race on several occasions. We now have him with us and we hope to be the dominant club for the season and in a position to win that race this year, which will be held on the first Sunday of July.
Asked what the aim of the club was, Sylvester replied: “To take cycling to another level here in Anguilla and having a local cyclist win the John T. Race. Over the past recent years the first prize has gone abroad and we are hoping by forming this team and having these dominant riders, that we will keep the prize here in Anguilla this year.”
Replying to another question relating to the need to have young people fully occupied as much as possible, Sylvester stated: “Cycling in Anguilla is something that we think will keeps us out of trouble, When you go on your bike, you concentrate on cycling and that will help to discipline you. I would advise all youngsters, male and female, to take up cycling. It is a very good sport even though it is a little expensive, and as I said, once you are involved in that, there is nothing else on your mind to do. You definitely would be occupied.”
The sponsors of AXA United Cycling Club include, Ricketts & Associates, Ron Sign Shop, Malika Day Spa, Brian’s Construction, KT &T Construction Management and Real Estate, Manor’s Guest House, Dungeon Gym, Lakes World, South American Imports and ZaZAA Boutique.
