Miriam Gumbs Home Ward Manager At Workshop In Mexico

Anguilla was recently represented by Nurse Coreen Hodge, Ward Manager at the Miriam Gumbs Senior Citizens Home, at a Nurse Leader Workshop in Mexico City. It was held by the Inter-American Centre for Social Studies with sponsorship by PAHO/WHO and New York University. Her attendance was made possible by the Anguilla Social Security Board, PAHO and the Ministry of Social Development.

Ms Hodge said that the workshop, on the nurse’s role as leader, was aimed at assisting older persons teaching health, identifying health problems and enabling them to seek appropriate treatment. The sessions were conducted by four professors attached to New York University.

In addition to Anguilla, participants attended from Grenada, Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Montserrat, St. Lucia, El Salvador, Bahamas, Costa Rica, Paraguay and host country, Mexico.

The Anguillian participant described the workshop as having been a valuable and rewarding experience. Ms. Hodge said that she was now completing a proposal for the Health Authority of Anguilla and the Ministry of Social Development to have registered nurses involved in the care of older persons.
