The money was raised in donations collected at a benefit concert held at the Landsome Bowl Cultural Centre on February 27, as reported last week. A cheque in the above amount was presented to the officer in charge of the Anguilla Red Cross, Ricky Rouphine on Tuesday evening this week.
Joylyn Carty, one of the organisers of the concert, said at the presentation ceremony that the function was planned during many meetings of the group from various parts of the island with a number of young people in The Valley area including various artistes. She described the concert as having been “a great output by the people of Anguilla”.
Mr. Rouphine said he was pleased that the passionate group of young people had developed the idea of organising the benefit concert and thanked them for their work. “We at the Anguilla Red Cross wish to say thanks very much to Rainbows for Haiti for their contribution and we think it is a substantial amount,” he stated. He said there were many other needy causes, including a number in Anguilla to which he hoped that the group and others would continue to provide assistance.
He explained that, like all other funds, the money would be sent to the British Red Cross for disbursement to Haiti. He disclosed that the overseas Red Cross Branch comprising Anguilla, Cayman Island, the British Virgin Islands, Montserrat and the Turks and Caicos Islands, had so far raised over 300,000 pounds sterling.
Mr. Rouphine added that it was expected that the British Red Cross would release a statement later as to how the money was spent so that a report could be published.
The organisers of the benefit concert included Melissa Carty, Farrah Banks, Joylyn Carty, Agnita Hodge, Carlyn Carty and Khalidah Banks.
