Their bright colourful uniforms looked resplendent on the green playing field under the afternoon sun at Sandy Ground late last week, as children from the Central Christian School, at Rey Hill, competed among themselves in their Annual Sports Day.

Ross Guishard, a teacher at the Central Baptist Church-run school, said the sporting activities comprised lime & spoon races, potato races and short sprints for children in the pre-school section; and the 800 metres open and various other medium and short races for the students in the primary division.
Mr. Guishard stated that all the students were very involved in sporting activities, although there was not very much of a playground at the school. He explained that training in athletics and football was largely done by a games teacher in the afternoons. “Since we have been in the National Primary Schools Competition, we have done very well,” he recalled. “Usually we would place about fourth or fifth which is not bad for a small school.”

He said that for the past five years the boys, especially, had been involved in the National Bank of Anguilla-sponsored Primary Schools Football Competition. “We have been trying to get a girls’ team but have not been successful yet. Hopefully we will succeed sometime in the future,” he added.
The Central Christian School has a student body of over 160. At present, a new school is under construction in the Cauls Pond Section of the island, north of The Quarter main road. In addition to accommodating a modern and well-equipped place of learning, the large surrounding area of land will provide space for an abundance of recreational and sporting activities.
