OLDEST VOTER AT THE POLLS

At 99, Mr. Charlie Gumbs, of The Quarter, was the oldest voter who turned up to vote in the February 15 General Election in Anguilla.

Standing akimbo and smiling, his well-known posture, the retired long-serving taxi-driver, looking very well for his age, braved the hot sun to cast his ballot. He was, however, believed to have been granted the courtesy to enter the polling station ahead of the more able persons.

Mr. Gumbs, ever aware of his civic responsibility, had the privilege not only to be among many other persons of the island’s ageing population at the polls, but in the company of hundreds of young people as well.

The eighty-odd percent of voter turnout in Anguilla is believed to have been the largest so far in recent years
