The paintings all reflect the colours of the sky and sea in the Caribbean with many seascapes using turquoise blue in various shades. There are several sea scenes of the tropics with boats, beaches, palms, houses and views typical of Anguilla and the Caribbean region. Included in the exhibition are ten oil paintings that are on cardboard or plywood, two water colours and eight giclee on canvas or paper.
Chapon is a French artist who was born in Bordeaux, France, and sailed to the West Indies in 1981 and to St Martin in 1984. He settled in St Martin in the tiny village of Colombier. Since 1995 he has worked and lived in his picturesque home, which also serves as his gallery, overlooking Cul de Sac Bay. He was first a photographer but always had a love for art that he has developed since coming to the Caribbean. He is a self-taught artist using books to teach him some of the techniques.
The giclee fine art is a special way of reproducing paintings with the continuous ink jet technology of an Iris printer and gives a high definition print that will last for one hundred years. It is printed on archival paper or canvas and the quality is exceptional.
This is the second time that Chapon has exhibited in Anguilla but he has had exhibitions in St Martin, Antigua, the United States of America, Paris, Curacao and St Barths.
