NOMINATION DAY MOVES ELECTION DAY CLOSER


With Nomination Day having been on January 21, and several days having elapsed since then, Election Day is just three weeks away on February 15.

A total of 20 candidates, representing three parties and three independents, turned up at the Anguilla House of Assembly – the Atlin Noraldo OBE Parliamentary Building – for nomination. Dressed in their Sunday best, a departure from the casual attire in earlier years, they proceeded in groups into the assembly hall, with each party and candidate accompanied by supporters, two nominees and a witness for nomination.

Having paid their prescribed deposit fee earlier at The Treasury, they signed the relevant nomination documents in the presence of, and under, the supervision of the Returning Officers.

The contesting parties are the incumbent Anguilla United Front (AUF) under the leadership of Mr. Victor Banks, Minister of Finance, Economic Development, Commerce and Tourism in the present caretaker Government along with Deputy Leader, Evans McNiel Rogers, Minister of Social Development and five other new candidates; the Anguilla United Movement (AUM) led by Mr. Hubert Hughes, a former Chief Minister along with Mr. Edison Baird, Deputy Leader, a former Minister of Education and Health, and three new candidates; and the Anguilla Progressive Party (APP) led by Mr. Brent Davis along with Mr. Jerome Roberts, Deputy Leader, and two other candidates. The independent candidates are Kennedy Hodge, Terry Harrigan and Sutcliffe Hodge.

The electoral districts and the candidates contesting seats are as follows:

District 1: Othlyn Vanterpool (AUF); Pam Webster (APP); Samuel Webster (AUM); Kennedy Hodge (Independent) and Terry Harrigan (Independent).

District 2: Cora Richardson-Hodge (AUF) and Jerome Roberts (APP).

District 3: Evans McNiel Rogers (AUF) and Sutcliffe Hodge (Independent).

District 5: Edison Baird (AUM); Delsic Rey; (AUF) and Fabian Lewis (APP).

District 7: Wilmoth Hodge (APP); Kenswick Richardson (AUF) and Walcott Richardson (AUM).

The Returning Officers before whom they appeared on Nomination Day, and who will count the ballots on Election Day, are Rodney Rey, District 1; Bernard Wattley, District 2; Laureen Bryan, District 3; Colleen Horsford, District 4; Jacqueline Bryan-Niles, District 5; Worrel Brooks, District 6; and Gracita Christopher, District 7.

There are 8,652 registered voters in Anguilla for the 2010 General Election on February 15.
