Debating Society To Hold First Time Political Debates

The Literary and Debating Society of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School in Anguilla is to present the first ever Political District Debates in Anguilla in cooperation with the various parties and candidates.

The schedule is as follows: District 7 – Friday, January 8; District 6 – Monday, January 11; District 5 – Thursday, January 14; District 4 – Saturday, January 16; District 3 – Monday, January 18; District 2 – Wednesday, January 20; and District 1, Friday, January 22.

The venue will be the Rodney McArthur Rey Auditorium commencing at 7.30 nightly. A contribution of EC$5,00 will be accepted.

The Literary and Debating Society told The Anguillian that the idea of a district debate was conceived in a classroom by a few ALHCS students after comparing the US Presidency race with the Anguilla’s election campaigning. “Although the US election was on a far larger scale than ours, we still believed that there was a way that all candidates, vying for a position in the Anguilla Government, could debate against each other on the same platform,” the Debating Society stated.

The Society was asked how the debates would be conducted. “The questions in the debate will cover many areas including issues concerning our youth, crime and violence; ways in which our new Government would contribute to sustainable and eco-friendly among other issues,” the ALHCS debaters explained.

They added: “Even though none of the organisers has reached the voting aged, we still believed that our overall aim will be achieved – making Anguillians aware of what each candidate has to offer to Anguilla and who will be the best persons for the tasks at hand. This will be achieved in a simple way: the youth will ask the questions; the candidates will answer and the people will know.

“We are inviting the general public to attend the district debates as we sing the battlefield theme song: We are out to build a new Anguilla in anticipation of the results of the 2010 elections.”
