Anguilla LIAT Staff Beat All Other Stations

The LIAT staff at Wallblake Airport in Anguilla has been awarded not only for winning the airline’s on-time performance in September 2009 in Zone A, but for having won it more times in the calendar year than any other destination. The monthly competition was suspended for two months due to industrial problems affecting the regional carrier, but in the ten months during which it was held, Anguilla won nine times in that period.

By winning the competition so many times, the LIAT staff in Anguilla has also won the opportunity of keeping the prized plaque for good. The Anguilla station earlier won the Quick Pack competition for best delivery performance, for the most times as well, and was presented with a model aircraft for permanent display in the office.

“This is a very special station. It is small but it is very effective,” said Wilbur Edwards, Director of Ground Operations, Cargo and Quikpak at the airline’s Head Office in Antigua. “It is well-managed. It has sterling leadership. The staff strives for excellence and support the Manager very well. They always are at the top of the game; they do not settle for second place. It is very amazing. The Anguillian public is very fortunate to have such an efficient team looking after its needs and I am sure it has felt the benefits.”

Mr. Edwards, who came to make the presentation of the plaque, was asked how the airline’s staff in Anguilla could show an on-time performance when the aircraft was arriving late at Wallblake Airport so often.

“That is a very good question because what we are measuring is the station’s performance,” Mr. Edwards replied. “For instance, if the plane arrives here four hours late, they have no control over that, but there is a scheduled transit time of half an hour for them to get the plane out…Their performance is so remarkable that for the ten months they had a total of 616 flights and they had zero station delays. I am telling you there is no other performance like that. Martinique did very well, tied a couple times in first place with Anguilla, but Anguilla is so far ahead that it just blew all the other contenders away.” He said other good challengers were Puerto Rico, Nevis, Tobago, Guyana and Curacao, but Anguilla topped all of them.”

Responding, Manager of the LIAT Office in Anguilla, Susan Daly-Richardson, said she was honoured to have received the awards on behalf of her fellow workers and herself. She stated that the success of her station was due to the hard work of her office staff, the ground-handlers and other airport departments, all working as a team which coined the phrase – Together Everyone Achieves More.

“We are going to keep striving for excellence and to perform well for LIAT,” she added.
