Rainbow City, Anguilla

In the above composite photograph, taken by Rickiell Hodge, this sweeping rainbow, just hovering over the land, and the other, faintly seen, caught the attention of many persons in Anguilla. In the light drizzle on Friday afternoon, December 4, some people rushed to vantage points clicking tiny standard cameras and cellular phones to catch this most arresting scene of such a close-up and distinct colourful pattern in the sky.

A scientific note on the internet describes the rainbow as “an optical and meteorological phenomenon that causes a spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the sun shines onto droplets of moisture in the earth’s atmosphere. They take the form of a multi-coloured arc, with red on the outer part of the arch and violet in the inner section of the arch.”
In many rainbows a seven-fold range of colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet may be seen.
“Rainbows can be caused by other forms of water than rain, including mist, spray and dew.”
The Bible describes a rainbow as a covenant by God with mankind that there would not be another flood to destroy the earth. The Book of Genesis reads in part: “I do set my bow in the cloud…and I will remember my covenant between you and me and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy the earth.”
