Government Happy With Opening Of Golf Course

Speaking on behalf of the Anguilla Government, Chief Minister, Osbourne Fleming, and the Minister of Tourism, Victor Banks, have expressed much delight over the coming reopening of the Temenos Golf Course on December 19, under the management of Cap Juluca.
Mr. Fleming, speaking to reporters in a teleconference from London, where he and Mr. Banks have been attending the Overseas Territories Consultative Council Conference, said the Government was happy about the reopening of the golf course for two reasons.

One is the restoration of a number of jobs for Anguilllians and the other is the additional visitors it will attract to the island as an important component of Anguilla’s tourism product.
“There is an agreement signed between Cap Juluca and the Temenos project whereby the golf course will be maintained and opened for business on December 19.” The Chief Minister said. “This has brought quite a bit of joy to us because of the amount of interest that has been expressed by persons who want to come to Anguilla but who had changed their vacation because the golf course was not operational.” He stated that he and Mr. Banks were told that when the news of the reopening of the course broke, that Anguilla’s Tourist Board Office in New York reported that over 4,500 calls were received expressing their delight.

Mr. Fleming said the rate for a round of golf for Anguillian and St. Martin/St. Maarten players would now be US$99 and for visitors US$225. “I thought it was important to let you know this because the most important thing about it was that a number of persons had begun to cancel their reservations in Anguilla and I believe this is good news for us. I am personally heartened to know that the workers who were off their jobs are now back to work. We have been told that the restaurant on the project will not be opened during this period. However, there will be facilities that will address the needs there.”

Mr. Banks observed that the golf course was a great enhancement to Anguilla’s tourism product and was pleased that it would be reopened in time for the winter season. He noted, however, that the wider problem of the Temenos project still needed to be addressed and that the Government had a team working on compulsory acquisition issues and that its report should be available shortly. He said that a valuation assessment of the project would also be undertaken to present to the investors who had shown an interest in the development.

The US$50 million 18-hole Championship Temenos Golf Course, designed by Greg Norman, is considered to be one of the finest courses in the Caribbean. The 7,063-yard facility first opened in 2006 but stopped operations when the entire project was closed. The golf course offers dramatic elevation changes and water facilities on 13 holes. It is located on prime land on Anguilla’s southwest coast with spectacular views of St. Martin/St. Maarten and the Caribbean Sea.
