Inspector Paul Sinclair warned, however, that the reduction in this activity must not be misunderstood as the burglars were only waiting the opportunity to strike again with greater intensity particularly around the Christmas Season. He has therefore appealed to all persons to be vigilant and to assist the police in their investigations.
There were five cases of theft at South Hill, The Valley, Stoney Ground, Wallblake and The Farrington. A chain saw, groceries, liquor and bananas were stolen. One male was arrested.
Two males were arrested for grievous bodily harm and one female for obstructing a police officer. Another three males were arrested to prevent a breach of the peace.
A case of forgery in which someone’s cheque book was used to purchase goods is under investigation.
There were three cases of criminal damage at the Farrington, South Hill and East End. The items damaged were fish pots, the window of a house, a vehicle and, at Lower South Hill, a political campaign poster belonging to the United Front Party.
Superintendent of Police, Rudolph Proctor, said the poster, bearing images of candidates, was damaged by fire on the night of November 21 and that an investigation had been opened into the matter with a view to persecuting the offender. He said it was a sad occurrence which impacted negatively on the island and a departure from the normal incident-free election campaign in Anguilla. He warned that the destruction of property was punishable under the Criminal Code and that in a case of arson there were serious penalties, even life imprisonment in some instances.
