The Leo Club has become the first youth organisation to achieve membership of the Anguilla National Trust having contributed more than one hundred East Caribbean dollars towards the work of the Trust.

In addition, on Tuesday February 11 the Club presented a cheque for $324 to the Administrative Manager of the National Trust, Karlyn Liburd, which it raised from a car wash held for that purpose.

Club member Soeride Kalmere said she had been on a tour of the Trust’s projects at the Big Spring, Island Harbour, and the East End Pond and thought the work was a commendable effort. She was so impressed with what she had seen that she undertook to raise some money to assist the Trust with the development of its preservation projects on the island. She took the idea to the membership of the Leo Club and it was agreed to hold a car wash as a fund-raiser. She was accompanied at the brief presentation ceremony by the Club’s Immediate Past President, Shaynis Connor, and Assistant Secretary/Treasurer, Tiffany Hughes.

Executive Director of the National Trust, Ijahnya Christian, said the contribution by the Leo Club augured well for the Trust at the start of 2003. “It is a gesture made by a group of young people which gives life to the Trust’s motto ‘Preservation for Generations’. It makes us know that that the Trust has a sound future and it demonstrates the appreciation of the island’s youth of the need to protect our island’s heritage,” she said.

She offered profound thanks to the Leo Club and encouraged other youth and community organisations to follow suit. “We are also very proud to have the Leo Club on board as an organisational member and the first youth organisation to become a member of the Anguilla National Trust.”

The Leo Club has some 25 members between the ages of 18 and 28 years.
