UWI Open Campus Anguilla Graduating In Style


This year the Open Campus Anguilla site, can boast of six graduands. They are Ingrid Richardson, Glen Boothe, Angelene Benn-Henry, Ruth Payne and Fiona Wilkinson with BSc Management Studies degrees from the Faculty of Social Science, and Shauna Connor with a B.Ed Administration from the Faculty of Humanities and Education. All the graduands will be awarded honours degrees. However, one student accomplished truly outstanding results; Ms Ingrid Richardson, currently the Senior Library Assistant at the Anguilla Public Library, obtained a First Class Honours degree with a 3.93 grade point average and was among the seven finalists regionally for the choice of Valedictorian of the Class of 2009.

The graduation will take place on Saturday, 17 October 2009 at 5:00 p.m., in Gros Islet, St Lucia, and five of the graduands are expected to attend their formal graduation along with the Head of UWI Open Campus Anguilla site, Carla Harris Pascal. The Minister of Education, the Honourable Evans McNeil Rogers, has confirmed his attendance. The government of Anguilla strongly supports the UWI Open Campus having provided scholarships for five of the six persons from the graduating class. LIAT must also be thanked for their support in facilitating their attendance of the ceremony.

This year’s graduation is a special event. Not only is it the inaugural graduation ceremony for the Open Campus which was launched in June 2008; additionally the Honourable Sir George Alleyne, Chancellor of the UWI, will induct the first Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor of the Open Campus, Professor Hazel Simmons‐McDonald. Under her leadership, the Open Campus was accepted as a member of the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) which is concerned with policies related to Open and Distance Learning internationally. She has also overseen the broadening of the Open Campus programming to include online certificates in NGO Management, Business/Entrepreneurship and two new Masters Programs in Literacy and Adult and Continuing Education. The Pro Vice Chancellor’s induction will occur under the distinguished patronage of the Governor General of Saint Lucia, Her Excellency, Dame Dr. Pearlette Louisy, the day before the graduation which will be streamed live from the Open Campus website at http://www.open.uwi.edu.
