Naming The Welches Polyclinic

The late Victoria (Tota) Smith was one of Anguilla’s early nurses and midwives who served the East End community, in particular, for many years.

Her outstanding contribution and the services of the late Margaret Fleming as well as others have long been commended by many persons on the island. In keeping with recent efforts to recognise the work of Anguillians, a suggestion has now been put forward for the Welches Polyclinic to be named after Victoria Smith.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Infrastructure, Kenneth Harrigan, said he had made that promise sometime ago. “We all know who Tota Smith was and the role she played in the delivery and care of the babies born in our constituency. Today we honour her for her services and dedication to our people,” he said.

“In seeking to fulfill my promise, I am now asking the Minister of Health to instruct his staff to start the process of formally naming this facility ‘The Victoria (Tota) Smith Polyclinic.’ Mr. Reid I am giving you until May to complete process. On Anguila Day this year I want to officially unveil, with Helena Vanterpool and Amy Carty, the plaque which names this building “The Victoria Smith Polyclinic.”

Helena and Amy were among a number of mothers whose children Victoria Smith delivered in the eastern end of the island.
