As a thank-you gesture to the sponsor of its Trinidad-made costumes, the Valley Community Troupe presented its championship trophy to Tom Montvel-Cohen, a Director of the Crocus Bay Development Company, from whom it had received a sponsorship cheque for US$10,000. The trophy and photographs of the troupe will be displayed at the company’s office.
Roy Carty, President of the Troupe, said it was its 12th year of competition and that it had scored first place positions in eight consecutive years. In addition to the championship trophy, the group won the competitions for Queen of the Bands and Largest Troupe. The successful competitors also received EC$8,500. Some of the prize money will be used to decorate, with ornamental plants, the new access road, provided by Government, to the west of the Landsome Bowl Cultural Centre.
Tom Montvel-Cohen said his company was very happy to be a part of The Valley Community and it was a wonderful Troupe; an excellent theme and the costumes were beautiful. “We look forward to many more years of sponsorship,” he added.
Victor Banks, the Elected Member for Valley South, an active member of the Troupe, hoped that other corporate groups would become involved in troupe development. Mr. Banks, who with Jeff and others, showcased wheel barrows of fruits and vegetables, added that in former years the Valley Troupe had participated in several other segments of the carnival parade. He was grateful to various sponsors in the past and a number of players in the Troupe.
