John T Memorial Cycle Race In Anguilla A Great Success


The John T Memorial 10th Anniversary Cycle Race, sponsored overall by LIME, the regional telecommunications company, was a big success in Anguilla on Saturday and Sunday, July 4 and 5.

The event attracted many cyclists from Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Martin/Maarten, Curacao, Guadeloupe, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Guyana and host island, Anguilla.

The race, described as the biggest cycle event in the Caribbean, had the following results with the top places taken by Guadeloupe with Fabrice Gene in first place; Nicholas Dumont, second; and Yamik Caudeon, third. In fourth place was Quinten Winkel of Cuaraco; and placing fifth was Varo Jean-Louis of St. Martin.
The event was organised by the Anguilla Amateur Cycling Association.

A welcome ceremony was held for the cyclists at Blue Ridge Hotel at South Hill at which the Hon. Victor Banks, then Acting Chief Minister, greeted them and said he was grateful that they had come to Anguilla for the event, thus showing their love for the sport and support for the island’s young people.

There were also remarks by Minister of Sports, the Hon. Evans Rogers, Evan Gumbs, Dwayne Gibnbs, Joylyn Carty and George Ronmey, a noted cyclist, organiser. “I firmly believe that cycling can be used as a vehicle to assist in bringing about positive changes among our youth who are anticipating to be trouble-makers,” he commented.
