In Americas and Caribbean: Anguilla Biggest Award Winner

Anguilla has been showcased as the biggest award winner in the Americas and the Caribbean, winning almost concurrently, awards in Puerto Rico and New York.

On Thursday, June 11, Anguilla stole the awards when the Caribbean Tourism Organisation paid tribute to members of the US and Caribbean media during a special Caribbean Media Awards Luncheon.

Anguilla was the featured destination for two of the six top awards, in addition to the afternoon’s grand prize of “Best in Show.” David Bear, former Travel Editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, took home the prize for “Best Feature Article in a Consumer Newspaper” for his story entitled “Casual Anguilla: Miles of Superb Beaches.”

The same article, which was nationally syndicated across the USA, was also honoured with the “Best in Show” grand prize. Anguilla also won in the category of “Best Broadcast Feature (U.S.)” with Food Network’s Alton Brown’s “Feasting on Waves: Island Thyme” a culinary tour of the island’s local cuisine such as Halls Bakery and Cristabelles, escorted by Chef Dale Carty.

Producer Dana Popoff was also on hand to receive the award on behalf of the show. Both features were initiated and facilitated by the Anguilla Tourist Board, North America.

More than 100 submissions were received across six categories in print and broadcast media. The “Best in Show” winner was chosen from the six finalists. On stage to receive the awards, along with the media, were Minister of Tourism, Victor Banks and Tourism Adviser, Donna Banks

“The CTO Media Awards are important because they recognise the very best in publicity for Caribbean destinations,” Mrs. Banks said. “We are particularly gratified that Anguilla performed so exceptionally and congratulate our representative Marie Walker and our PR Agency, the Portfolio Marketing Group, for their steller performance.”
