Spanish Community Enjoy Softball At Coronation Park

The growing population in Anguilla is showing an increase in sporting activities on the island and among the participants and sport lovers are the fairly large Spanish nationals from the Dominican Republic.

The western portion of Coronation Park in The Valley was the scene of much activity over the weekend as a large section of the Spanish community converged there for their usual exciting softball matches between two competing teams.

“We are keeping a lil’ fun, enjoying ourselves and hope it will continue every Sunday and Wednesday and so on,” one of the team members told The Anguillian, in his heavy Spanish accent. “The name of my team is “The New Generation” and we are competing against “The Elciosa”.

The players and their supporters said they were pleased that The Anguillian had visited them to give them some coverage and to recognise their contribution to sports on the island.

Many of them form part of the workforce in Anguilla. A number of the menfolk are currently working in the construction industry, while others, unemployed, are waiting for the re-start of projects and have been allowed to remain on the island. Some of the womenfolk are gainfully employed at various business and domestic places.
The Spanish nationals are generally well-behaved and have integrated well among the Anguillian people. Many families here benefitted much from the old days of the “Santo Domingo run” when local men travelled there to eke out a living not in construction, like their Spanish friends here, but in the cane fields when sugar was king.
