Governor: 'Anguillian Deputy An Important Bridge For Me'

Newly-appointed British Governor in Anguilla, His Excellency Alistair Harrison, told reporters on Tuesday this week that his Anguillian Deputy, Stanley Reid, was serving the role as an important bridge, to the island and its people, for him in the same way that he had been to his predecessor, Andrew George.

Governor Harrison, who was sworn into office at a ceremony at the Anguilla House of Assembly last week, Tuesday, April 21, was at the time responding to reporters’ questions at his first press conference held in the Executive Council’s Chambers.

While avoiding direct comment on a question regarding the length of the current appointment of Mr. Reid as Deputy Governor of Anguilla, Mr. Harrison had this to say: “I would say that I have very full confidence in Stanley Reid. He did an excellent job in bridging the gap between Andrew George and myself. It was a lot longer than we expected because of my delayed arrival.

“I think that Stanley also does an excellent job in bridging the gap between me, as an outsider, and the people of Anguilla. Of course he understands Anguilla much better than I do at the moment and he has been very helpful to me in that respect too, and I think that the present arrangement works extremely well.”

Mr. Reid is the first Anguillian to have been formally appointed to the post of Deputy Governor, an appointment he has had since July 2006 in the final days of Governor Alan Huckle in Anguilla. Mr. Reid, who then acted as Governor, was sworn in as Deputy Governor the same day that Mr. Andrew George took the oath as Governor of Anguilla.

Mr. Reid, who was not at the Governor’s press conference, has responsibility mainly for the Anguilla Public Service.
