Qualified Voters Urged To Register

All persons qualified to vote in Anguilla are being urged to take advantage of the newly-introduced system of continuous registration to have their names registered on the Voters’ Lists in the seven electoral districts on the island.
The advice has come from the Electoral Registration Officer, Pricilla Gumbs.

During the first quarter which ended on February 8, 130 persons were registered. The largest registrations were in Valley North with 22; Valley South, 33; Road South, 24; and West End, 34. The registrations in the other Electoral Districts were Road North, 6; Sandy Hill, 7; and Island Harbour, 4.

Registrations are continuing for the second quarterly list which will be posted on May 12. These will be followed by registrations for the third and forth quarters of the year.

Ms Gumbs, who is being assisted by Chantel Ruan, Clerk to the Central Electoral Office, said that registrations were being steadily made and had shown some increase with the commencement of the second registration period now that more persons were becoming aware of the system.

With General Elections expected in Anguilla during the first quarter of 2010, she urged all qualified voters to register before it is too late.

Meanwhile, in a recent statement, Supervisor of Elections, Mr. Colville Petty, made the point that “the Anguillian people had long been calling for the introduction of a system of continuous registration of voters.” He stressed that “now that they have it they should not fail to use it because the vote is too sacred a right to waste.”
