Dr. Lindel Brookes To Take Advanced Training

Praises Dental Unit In Anguilla

Anguillian Dental Surgeon, Dr. Lindell Brooks, a 1984 graduate of Maharry Medical College School of Dentistry in Nashville, Tennessee, and a staff member there from that year, is to further his studies in July this year. In addition to his work at the school, he has been operating a private practice over the years in general dentistry from implants to preventive care.

Dr. Brooks, decided last year to return to school to do an advanced degree Prosethodontics. His studies will involve three major areas in the field of study: removal of prosthodontics; fixed prosthodontics and implants prosthodontics. He said he would like to place some emphasis on maxillofacial prosthodontics which deals with restoring patients who have had cancer of the jaw, the eye and nose to normal functions and esthetics.

“I was fortunate to have been accepted at three of the major schools in the United States, but I have elected to go to a school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, because of its proximity to home and I can come home more regularly, something I am looking forward to,” he said. He will be studying for a period of three years.

Asked what his plans were after those three years, he replied: “That question has been asked numerous times. I know and I promised repeatedly that I will be coming home and that certainly is my true intent to come home and practice. I come home on vacation and try to assist at the Dental Unit, making certain that the Anguillian people do not forget me, in a sense, but more importantly, the opportunity to be home with family. So I feel when that programme is completed I can see myself coming home immediately or a year after that programme.”

Dr. Brooks has been assisting at the Dental Unit since December 18, the day after arriving on the island. The Dental Surgeon, who returned to the United States on Wednesday this week, praised the clinic for its services.

“I must say that I am very, very much pleased with the improvements that have been made at the Dental Clinic,” he said. “There is a much better organisation, more efficiency, more professionalism and I think it really speaks to the leadership that is there by Dr. Mussington and others.”

As regards the island in general, Dr. Brooks said there was much improvement in the construction industry in terms of new residential areas. His concern has been with the infrastructure as far as roads were concerned, but he was happy to hear about the new road development due to take place shortly.

Dr. Brooks, who previously visited the island in 2000, was very impressed with the Christmas beautification and lights in the various communities. “I think it is truly an awesome sight. I enjoyed it tremendously. I attended most of the functions. I think the lights were professionally done, well organised. You could see that there was some planning and I think it was most impressive. I was fortunate to participate in some serenading. I hadn’t played the banjo in over 30 years.”

The Anguillian Dental Surgeon offered this message tp the people of the island: “I think it is important that we as adults recognise and understand the significance of playing the type of leadership role that our young people can follow. When we think in terms of the growth of Anguilla, we think in terms of the future and the future of the island lies strictly in the hands of the youth. Therefore there has to be some accountability and responsibility demonstrated by adults so that our youth can follow. That is a serious concern.”
