Three Charged For Illegal Sand-Mining

One of the shameful and destructive acts by a number of persons is illegal sand-mining at Windward Point and Savannah Bay at the eastern end of Anguilla.

Windward Point Beach, in particular, is like a war zone completely denuded of its sand resources and the exploiters have even driven their heavy equipment onto the surf areas to scrape away the sand from the water.

Police have now entered the two protective areas to stop the illegal sand-mining in response to complaints by environmentalists and concerned members of the public.

As a result, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Illidge Richardson, has reported that three young men, whom he did not name, have been charged with illegal sand-mining at Windward Point and are due to appear in Court.

The fine for such an offence is normally $5,000.
