SCOTIABANK PRESENTS CHAMPION BOAT RACE PRIZES

For the first time in the six years of its sponsorship, by Scotiabank (Anguilla) Ltd and Master Card, the prize money and trophy for the Champion of Champion boat race were shared by two winners.

Each August the race climaxes the one-week series of boat races, a most exciting component of the Anguilla Summer Festival. This year, after a review of the Champions of Champions race, a tribunal of the Boat Racing Committee awarded joint championships to the UFO owned by Ervin Webster and family of Island Harbour and Super Star owned by Jeffery Richardson of South Hill.

Representatives of the two winning boats were each presented with cheques in the amount of US$900 at a brief ceremony at Scotiabank on Tuesday afternoon, December 4. Tommy Webster and Roland Rogers received the prize money on behalf of UFO and Glenford Paul, captain on behalf of Super Star.

The trophy will remain at Scotiabank with the names of UFO and Super Star inscribed on it as the 2002 joint champions.

The other boats which placed 3rd, 4th and 5th in the race were earlier awarded US$600, US$400 and US$200 respectively.

Managing Director of Scotiabank, Walter MacCalman, speaking on behalf of the Bank and Master Card, said they were pleased to be involved in the sponsorship of boat-racing in Anguilla thus making a contribution to the promotion of the national sport. He congratulated the joint winners of the Champion of Champions race for what turned out to be a most interesting result.

Chairman of the Boat-racing Committee, Calvert Carty, commended Scotiabank and Master Card for sponsoring the race for the sixth year. He was pleased that the presentation had brought closure to the event
