TRAGIC DEATH OF YOUTH ON WEST END ROAD

Friends Block South Valley Road
Anguilla recorded a tragic road accident just after midnight on Monday December 2, when 20-year-old Sigmund Carty of Roaches Hill, in the Valley area, fell from a pickup, travelling to the east just beyond the road junction to Long Bay, and died on the spot.

A report from the Royal Anguilla Police Force stated that Carty was found lying in a pool of blood on the side of the road and was pronounced dead by Dr. Adams at 2.15 am on the above date. His body was taken to Two Sons Funeral Home at North Hill to await a post mortem examination. He was the son of Neville and Ingrid Carty of Roaches Hill.

The pickup, on which Carty was a passenger, was being driven by Otasba Connor who was said to have been travelling to the Princess Alexandra Hospital for treatment for a stab wound he sustained during an altercation at West End.

The police statement reported that the Traffic Department was investigating the circumstances which resulted in the accident, while the Criminal Investigation Department was conducting inquiries into the stabbing of the driver of the vehicle.

Meanwhile, the tragic death of young Sigmund Carty triggered much emotional response from his friends in The Valley. They took over and blocked the road entrance to South Valley just beyond the roundabout, formed a circle with oleander flowering branches on the road and in the middle wrote: “R.I.P. Big-S” – the latter portion of the inscription being their friend’s nickname. There was a wreath on a nearby utility pole and flowers elsewhere in the area, both areas being where the youngsters and the deceased habitually congregated “to lime.” A wreath was also placed at the scene of the accident on the West End road.

The youngsters stopped vehicle drivers and pedestrians from entering the South Valley road, calling on them to “show respect” for their friend. While the emotionally-charged youngsters had their supporters, their action was met with criticism by a number of persons who understood their feelings, but said they had no right to unilaterally and unlawfully block the road.

A police contingent arrived on the scene and succeeded in clearing the road and restoring order in the area without incident. There were calls on the police to address the situation relating to the stabbing incident at West End, a matter which they said was actively in hand.
The Anguillian offers its condolences to the bereaved parents and other relatives of the late Sigmund Carty.
