AFA Senior Male Footballers Prepare For Regional Tournament


The AFA Anguilla National Football Team (Senior Male) is on a high after its commendable performance against El Salvador at the FIFA Qualifying World Cup Match held in Washington DC last month.

The energised team is actively engaged in rigorous training for the upcoming Digicel Regional Football Tournament to be held in Martinique in September of this year. Under the Head Coach Colin Johnson, the team prepares to come up again St. Vincent & The Grenadines and host country Martinique.

As part of its preparation, the team plans to engage in practice matches on a national level against St Kitts and Antigua. St Kitts will be invited to play against the team here in Anguilla (Home Game) carded for July and the team hopes to travel to Antigua (for an Away Game) in August.

The team has embarked upon a fundraising drive to gather funds to make these practice matches possible. The Sponsor a Player drive allows business places to participate by providing US$500 to sponsor the travel expenses of one player. Out of the team of eighteen players, sponsorship has already been committed for nine with the kind support of the following sponsors: Anguilla Block and Sand, Greig’s Trucking, Altamer, Pete’s Trucking, Bryan’s Equipment Ltd, Cartyville Plumbing (Laloo), Haskins Ltd., Leeward Island Sales, Blanchard’s Restaurant/Zurra’s Restaurant. Other good corporate citizens are invited to come on board to sponsor a player or make a contribution towards this drive.

The squad has also started its charitable community works program which will run concurrently alongside the fundraising drive. They jump started this drive by doing a thorough clean-up of the Coronation Park, home to most of their training sessions, last Saturday morning. Sunset Homes/ Signature Villas is acknowledged for donating the Tshirts which will be used during these community building initiatives.

Persons and businesses within the community are invited to come on board and support the efforts of the AFA and its team in this national endeavour.
