ALBERT LAKE RECEIVES AWARD

Anguilla’s long-established businessman, Albert A. R. Lake, was presented with an award from the Anguilla Progressive Association of New York on the occasion of its Sixth Annual Dinner Dance and celebration of the 35th Anniversary of the Anguilla Revolution which were held in New York in June this year.

Mr. Lake, who was one of three honourees, was unable to attend the presentation. It was therefore arranged for him to be presented with the award by the President of the Anguilla Community Foundation, Rhona Richardson, at the official opening of the Corporate Building of the National Bank of Anguilla on November 21. (The other persons who received their awards in New York were former Chief Minister Sir Emile Gumbs and Virginia Simmonds.)

In presenting the plaque award to Mr. Lake, Ms. Richardson read a statement from the Anguilla Progressive Association which traced his life and work over the past years. He was portrayed as a man with humble beginnings but whose hard work and ambition enabled him to rise as a force to be reckoned with in the business field.

After many years of endeavour, his growing business includes a rock quarry, hardware department, furniture store, grocery store, petrol station, real estate and property rentals. He was given the MBE award in 1978 and the OBE award in 1994 by Queen Elizabeth the Second for his outstanding service to Anguilla.

Just recently, the road running from the Valley area to the Quarter, where some of his businesses are located, was named after him in recognition of his services to the island.
