TWO BIG MEETINGS IN ANGUILLA


Two big and separate meetings were being held simultaneously in Anguilla in the middle of the week. One of them was the first mid-year review of the island’s tourism strategy and was held at the Royal Caribbean Resort conference room facility.

Those in attendance included Chief Minister Osbourne Fleming, Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Victor Banks, who set the tone of the meeting with comments on Anguilla’s tourism industry, its marketing efforts and the importance of the sector to the sustainable development of the island; Minister of Infrastructure and Communications, Kenneth Harrigan; officials of the Anguilla Tourist Board; and representatives of the hotel, banking and financial sectors.

The other meeting was the 19th Biennial Conference of the Caribbean Women’s Association (CARIWA), held in Anguilla for the first time. The opening session took place at the House of Chandeliers where the chairperson was CARIWA’s Secretary, Lana Hoyoung.

The official welcome and greetings were given by Lady Gumbs on behalf of Mrs. Ruby Fleming, wife of Chief Minister Osbourne Fleming and patron of the Anguilla Council of Women. The message from CARIWA was delivered by President Hyacinth Thomas; and the well-received keynote address entitled “Preserve our Nations for the next Generation,” excerpts of which will be published in the upcoming issue of The Anguillian, was presented by Marcella Liburd. She is the daughter of the late President of CARIWA, Ann Liburd and until recently, Speaker of the St. Kitts-Nevis National Assembly.

His Excellency Governor Andrew George commended CARIWA on its 19th Biennial Conference and its commitment to the development of women and family life and offered his best wishes to the organisation.

The CARIWA conference continued with workshop sessions from Wednesday with HIV/AIDs and women being one of the focal points of discussion. The conference will climax with a gala awards dinner at LA Café on Saturday.
