Category Of National Sports Awards Announced


The various categories of National Sports Awards to be presented to deserving nominees on Saturday, April 26, at the Campus B Auditorium, were officially announced on Tuesday this week at a press briefing at The Anguillian Newspaper.

Director of Sports, Alkins Rogers, requested Caribbean Commercial Bank, one of the five-star sponsors of the award ceremony from its inception, to announce the nominees.

CCB’s Assistant Manager, Trevor Woodley, said his financial institution was again delighted to be a sponsor for the sports awards. “Sports have always been dear to our hearts in the sponsorship of programmes, teams and different tournaments throughout the year,” he stated.

Mr. Woodley brought to the press briefing three CCB employees and sports personalities to read the list of nominees. They were Melessa Anderson, a female footballer with the Anguilla Fire Ants; Cleo Hamm, founder of Kicks United Football Club and Shyrone Hughes, former Track & Field Athlete.

The categories and nominees are as follows: Association of the year – Anguilla Cricket Association, Anguilla Cycling Association and Anguilla Amateur Athletics Association. Official of the year: Michael Morton, Calvin Hughes and Stanford Richardson. Sponsor of the year: Caribbean Commercial Bank, National Bank of Anguilla and Flag Luxury Properties; Boat of the year: Eagle (already decided by points); Sports Administrator of the year: Patricia Hodge, Heather Richardson and Kenn Banks; Team of the year: Anguilla Cricket Team, Pony and Anguilla Amateur Athletic Association; Coach of the year: Cardigan Connor, Kelvin Liddle and Wilma Proctor; and Media Personality of the year: Keithstone Graves, KCN and The Anguillian.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Minister of Social Development, Evans Rogers, at a press briefing, announced two categories of nominees. One category involves seven persons who volunteered their services in various areas of sports. They are Joan Gumbs, Angela Brooks, Kelvin Liddie, Paulivar Rogers, Owen Mussington, Louise Mussington, Michael Fleming and Janice Hodge.

The second category comprises a number of persons who have given special assistance to the development of sports in Anguilla. They are John Benjamin, Sam Webster, Rodney Rey and Sir Allen Stanford.

The Sports Awards Ceremony will commence with a parade and the guest speaker will be Sir Allen Stanford, the regional cricket promoter and financier. The programme includes the welcome by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Rodney Rey; address by the Minister of Sports, Evans Rogers; presentation of Youth Awards by Cable and Wireless, Senior Awards by the National Bank of Anguilla; the Volunteer and Special Awards by the Social Security Board; recognition of former sport persons (The Legends); Caribbean Commercial Bank nominees; sportsman/woman of the year by the Minister of Sports; award of sports personality by Cap Juluca; and a toast to the winners by His Excellency Governor Andrew George. There will be a number of musical presentations during the awards ceremony.
