White centre line markings are currently being solidly painted on the Stoney Ground/Little Dix section of the main road which loops around the eastern end of the island and down to Sandy Hill, The Farrington and The Quarter.

The customary work is being carried out under the able leadership of Land Surveyor John Rogers, Principal of Land Development Services Company. “We have the contract to do the line marking because we are the best at setting out lines,” he told The Anguillian. “We know the Traffic Code and we are going to do the centre and the sides and of course the stop lines as well.”

Equipment

Mr. Rogers went on: “We use a material called thermo-plastic. It is a compound that you melt at high temperature and lay on the road. It is very firm and lasts in excess of five years. If the centre lines are in properly, motorists will keep on their side of the road and we will not have as many accidents [as are now occurring].”
Provision is being made for the later installation of the “cat eyes” (the night-time illuminating gadgets installed between the lines.

Mr. Rogers is mainly assisted with the road markings by Danny Smith and Neville Hamilton, and to some extent, by his brother Steve who looks after the logistics.

There are already centre line markings in the western area of the island.
