The late Nell Rogers

It is reported that in the early hours of that day he was travelling along the Stoney Ground Road as a front seat passenger in a small white car driven by Glen Smith of Cauls Pond. A jeep, driven by Jamaican national, Kerone Tomlinson, collided head-on into the car, but mainly on the passenger’s side, after it was struck by another car.
Deputy Commissioner, Illidge Richardson, explained at Wednesday’s press briefing how the accident occurred as follows: “The vehicles were travelling in opposite directions,” he stated. “Three were travelling from south to north and a truck was ahead and two other vehicles were behind. A white jeep driven by Tomlison, who was arrested, was coming from the opposite direction. Somewhere along the line the second vehicle (a car) struck the jeep which then collided into the right front of the car [in which Rogers and Smith were travelling], causing extensive damage to both vehicles.

“It was in such an incident that Rogers lost his life while Smith was admitted to the hospital with some severe injuries. Tomlison, who was not injured, was arrested and charged with dangerous driving.”
Sergeant Randolph Yearwood noted that there had been some 16 road accidents during the past week. Deputy Commissioner, Illidge Richardson, said a number of motorists appeared to be out of control on the roads especially at night-time. He warned that the police would be out on patrol during the night, and at early morning, to monitor the speed of vehicles and to charge anyone found driving at an excessive rate.
Meanwhile, Rogers’ family and friends are in a state of mourning. He was a popular and smartly-dressed figure on the island, full of live and energy. He was in the barbecue business for sometime and later became involved in the construction industry. Up to the time of his death he was working on a building at the premises of Mr. Albert Lake where ribbons are now hanging from a fence in tribute to him.
He is survived by two children, Eltricea and Aikeem five sisters Pam, Silvia, Adelle, Shirley and Althea and two brothers, David and George as well as a close niece, Nicole. To them, other relatives and friends, The Anguillian offers its condolences.
