NARROW ESCAPE FOR MOTORISTS Police Warn Against Speeding

In the police weekly report on Wednesday this week, Deputy Commissioner, Illidge Richardson, told the media that the Traffic Department was concerned over the reckless driving on the island’s roads by some motorists. He made the point that a lot of the speeding was being done during the night.

He was at the time referring to two separate incidents in which a pick-up left the road and ran into the living room of a dwelling house at George Hill and two cars struck head on also in that area but with all three drivers escaping serious hurt.

Mr. Richardson said that sometime after 3.00 a.m. on Saturday, February 9, a police officer was driving his private car to the Sandy Ground Marine Base to report for duty there. It is alleged that another driver overtook a number of other vehicles. While overtaking the last vehicle he collided with the policeman’s car which was travelling in the opposite direction. Both drivers were detained at the hospital but with no serious injuries.

“The damage to the vehicles was extensive and it is surprising that the persons in both vehicles survived because of the nature of the accident,” Richardson commented.

He said the other accident on Tuesday involved the driver of a white pick-up. Around midnight the vehicle ended up in a house and luckily its residents were not in the living room area. “Looking at the vehicle, it appears that the driver had exceeded the 30-mile an hour speed limit because his vehicle was extensively damaged. He was also detained at the Princess Alexandra Hospital,” Mr. Richardson stated.

He said that despite the efforts of the police, persons were driving at great speeds endangering the lives of others especially during the night when they think the roads are virtually empty. “I appeal to all motorists to drive carefully because we do not want a repeat of last year when there were four road fatalities,” he added.

The top police official was pleased to report that while there were a number of thefts in various parts of the island, there were no serious incidents of armed robbery or burglary.
