He said the police executed a search warrant on Friday, February 8, relating to the misuse of controlled drugs.
“As a result of the operation three persons were arrested and have been charged to appear before the Magistrate, Inspector Sinclair reported. “Not only did we discover cannabis, but there was also crack cocaine. We have intelligence that there is an abuse of the stronger drug on the island (the crack cocaine)…It is a disturbing feature that on a Friday evening in a house in the open that people were using controlled drugs including the harder type of drug.”
The Inspector went on: “The one thing that is noticeable when you speak to people who are under the influence of such a strong narcotic, there appears to be a lot more glaze in their eyes and they look a lot more distant than you would normally expect. From my point of view, as head of the Task Force, it is a feature which is a disturbing one and it is something that we must get a firm group on.
“As I said before, we have intelligence in relation to cocaine and other drugs being used on the island and we will endeavour to find out from community intelligence who the people are, particularly those involved in the distribution of that type of drug in Anguilla. From a social point of view it can have serious effect in relation to criminality.”
Inspector Sinclair described the drug as being six cannabis plants under cultivation on the grounds of the house, a small amount of cannabis and two rocks of crack cocaine. “The issue is not that it is not a huge amount. The issue is that we have people who are using crack cocaine and the fact that there are people possessing it, shows that there is a clear indication that there is a market on the island.”
He disclosed that he was putting in place a strategy targeting not only the users of cocaine but particularly those engaged in its distribution for profit.”
Meanwhile, 67 cannabis plants were found under cultivation in the Lockrum area.
