“We intend to work closely with all of the stakeholders in education to maximise the quality of life for our young people,” he told The Anguillian.
Mr. Hazell made the statement this week following his appointment on November 1 to head the school, replacing Quincy Harrigan who relinquished the post of Principal which he held for two years. Mr. Hazell, who has been serving as Deputy Principal of the island’s largest school with a roll of some 1200 students, said the transition had been a smooth one. He emphasised that he and his colleagues were committed to improving the quality of learning at the school and raising the standards of behaviour among students.
Hazell, who just turned 51, taught at the Valley and Road Primary Schools in earlier years. He was trained at the St. Lucia Teachers College and the St. Lucia Technical College from 1972-74 and 1975-76 respectively. He later studied at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies and graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Sciences. He continued his formal studies at Nipissing University in North Bay, Onbtario, Canada from 1988-89 and obtained a Bachelor of Education Degree.
He began teaching at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School in 1986 and was assigned to the Science Department as a Chemistry Teacher. He later became head of that department. In 1971 he assumed the role of Senior Teacher with responsibility for the resources and furnishings of the school. He was appointed Deputy Principal in March 1995. He acted as Principal for two years prior to the arrival of Mr. Harrigan.
His long years of service and experience, particularly at the Comprehensive School, have placed him in a good position to take on the management of the institution. The Anguillian offers him every success in the years ahead.
