“To all who have assisted us on our journey, and to those who will assist us in the future, I say thanks a million on behalf of the past, the present, the prospective students, and the lecturers of the Comprehensive Learning Centre, where our aim is to continue to be innovative in our teaching approach and methods to bring about successful changes to the lives of our Caribbean’s people and their families,” she said. Since the opening of the CLC in 2002 there have been over one thousand students who have attended and the current roll is 150.

Chairing the ceremony was one of the lecturers, Mark Romney. He introduced several of the students who spoke eloquently about the courses they have taken and the lecturers as well as giving praise to Sandra York-Gumbs. He also introduced two of the sponsors, Mr Nash of Office World, St Maarten, and Quincy Gumbs of Fairplay Management. Nash spoke on behalf of the management and staff of his company who have been involved in giving back to education for many years. The company has been sponsoring a student at CLC for the past two years and it ensures that the Centre has enough paper to last for the year. He presented a cheque to York-Gumbs wishing the Centre every success and God’s blessings. Quincy Gumbs said he is proud of the students who all spoke so well and applauded the efforts of the management and staff for offering the education opportunities. He pledged to continue to support the Centre and encouraged other businesses to also help with financing.

Mrs York-Gumbs announced the launch of a scholarship in memory of Antoinette Richardson who was a student at the Centre and who died last year. Her daughter, Elainicia Richardson, is to be the first recipient of the scholarship that is to be managed by the Anguilla Community Foundation. Roselle Hennis-Richardson, sister of the late Antoinette, spoke about her sister while Carrolle Devonish, Executive Director of the Anguilla Community Foundation, noted that they are pleased to manage the scholarship.

The feature address was given by Avon Carty, Corporate Communications Manager of Cable and Wireless. She spoke on “Charting your Course and contributing to Anguilla’s Development.” She urged the students to take matters into their own hands, plan their future and take responsibility for the course they take. She noted that there are currently many opportunities in Anguilla for employment and she urged them to find out what is needed and go to the Comprehensive Learning Centre to study. She encouraged all students to chart a course that leads to their own growth and development as well as to the development of Anguilla.
The certificates and awards were presented by Colleen Horsford and Quincy Gumbs.
