The Anguilla Customs Club, which is part of the regional organisation, is now raising funds to help cover the cost of the local sponsorship. One of the latest contributors is ABC Supplies, a family-owned business which made its donation on Tuesday this week through its representative, Marlon Lake.
Speaking on behalf of the company, Mitch Lake said ABC Supplies was happy to support the Customs Department in its sporting endeavours and hoped that other businesses would give their assistance as well. “I am proud of the work of the department especially during this period of rapid economic development,” he added.
The tournament was an initiative of the late Errol Douglas a former Comptroller of Customs in Barbados. Originally it served as a goodwill tournament between Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago but has grown significantly over the years. There are now fourteen participating islands involved in such competitive sporting activities as football, basketball, table tennis, men’s cricket and ladies’ wind ball cricket. It is expected that 500 representatives from the fourteen islands will be in Anguilla for the occasion.
The major objective of the tournament is to enhance cooperation and partnership among the various Caribbean Customs administrations; establish and maintain a vibrant spirit of mutual support and respect through interaction and understanding; and generally to improve working and cultural relations among the Caribbean countries.
“As the host country, it is our responsibility to finance several areas of the tournament including food and drinks,” said Club’s President, Carl Richardson, and Kenneth Brooks, Chairman of the Food Committee, in a circular letter to business places seeking contributions. “Seeing that for the first time in the history of the tournament Anguilla is hosting the event, we, and the other members of the Customs Sports and Cultural Club, are asking for a significant contribution from your establishment towards defraying the cost of refreshments and meals.”
