POTTERY SKILLS BEING DEVELOPED IN ANGUILLA

The National Creative Arts Association in Anguilla (ANCAA) is developing skills in pottery-making among its membership and eventually plans to involve the participation of the wider community in the art form industry.

The association’s members had a great deal of practice obtained during a workshop from October 31 to November 4 at the residence of the Reverend and Mrs. Richard Fahie at The Forest. The training was conducted by Almena Cornelius, a former school teacher in Nevis, now a potter at the Newcastle Pottery there.

Her work in Anguilla was sponsored by the Caribbean Development Bank’s Technological Consultancy Services Network through the Small Business Development Unit (SBDU) at the Anguilla Development Board. Other assistance was obtained from the Angulla Social Security Board in the sum of EC$3,500. This covered organizational fees and equipment to make the workshop possible.

The technical assistance was aimed at providing the ANCAA with hands-on training in the basic techniques of pottery- making. The training also covered the firing of the pottery using coconut palm branches, shells and scrap wood as the fuel.
The items produced included flower pots, goblets, bowls, pots, baking dishes, ornaments as well as the “O’ gawd coal pots”. They were made from clay brought in for the purpose from Nevis. The items will be displayed during Tourism Week in Anguilla on November 22 and 23.
The Anguilla National Creative Arts Association has expressed thanks to Wilma Vanterpool of SBDU and the Anguilla Development Board for organising and sponsoring the workshop.
