National Youth Council Holds Successful Elections


The Anguilla National Youth Council has elected an executive committee for the upcoming year, 2008. This new executive committee replaces the committee which was elected in March 2007 for a six (6) month term. The previous executive committee was tasked with beginning the rebuilding process. Ms. Sherri-Anne Roberts in delivering the president’s report listed a number of activities which the council was involved in during the six month period.


Three of the activities highlighted in particular were:

1. Youth Leadership Training Seminar: This activity took place at Paradise Cove on August 30. Youth leaders from various organizations were trained in strategic planning, proposal writing, facilitating meetings and institutions of governance. This activity was a conducted in partnership with the Department of Youth and Culture. (Excerpt from Presidents Report)

2. Leaders of tomorrow...Today: This I believe was one of our most successful and fun activities. It provided young people with the opportunity to gain an appreciation of the roles of various decision makers in the community including personalities such as the Chief Minister, Minister of social Development among others. 3. HIV/AIDS Workshop: The information shared at this workshop which was produced in partnership with the National HIV/AIDS Programme provided participants with valuable information about HIV/AIDS including tips on dealing with the issue. (Excerpt from Presidents Report)

Ms. Roberts spoke well of her experience as president and referred to it as one of the most challenging, yet rewarding experiences of her life.

The new executive, which retains three (3) of five (5) members from the previous executive, will likewise be tasked with rebuilding the Council which has had an extended period of dormancy. It was moved and decided that the new executive committee will serve a period of one (1) year. The composition comprise:Ms. Sherri-Anne Roberts - President; Ms. Olufunmike Banks-Devonish - Vice President; Ms. Shountae Boothe - General Secretary; Ms. Patriese Richards - Treasurer; Ms. Magueda Jackson - Assistant Secretary-Treasurer and Ms. Rodi Richardson - Unattached Youth Representative.

The meeting, which was held at the Teacher’s Resource Centre, included representatives from eleven (11) of the Council’s fifteen (15) registered member organisations; these organization are:
All Ah Wee Youth Theatre Players
The Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School Environmental and Conservation Club
The Anguilla Pepper Steppers
The Anguilla Football Association
The Anguilla Tae Kwon Do Club
The Anglican Young People Association
The Anguilla Cadet Corps
The Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School Literary and Debating Society
The Church of God of Prophecy Youth Ministries
The Anguilla Netball Association
The Interact Club of Anguilla

The Ministry of Social Development, Department of Youth and Culture will like to congratulate the Anguilla National Youth Council on a successful elections and wish them the very best in 2008.
