Much Jubilation For Month Of The Elderly

Many senior citizens in Anguilla and neighbouring French St. Martin and Dutch St. Maarten, may long remember the time they spent together as they observed the Month of The Elderly (October) with a series of activities.

A number of the activities planned in Anguilla for the inmates of the Government-run Miriam Gumbs Senior Citizens Home, and those at the privately-owned Tender Loving Care Home, have had to be cancelled as a result of the recent inclement weather.

The most enjoyable day was the fete on the grounds of the Miriam Gumbs Senior Citizens Home at which some 67 inmates from St. Martin/St. Maarten joined their counterparts in Anguilla. As part of the grand occasion, many of the old folk broke out as they danced to the string-band music by Smokey and The Boys. A number of persons from the community participated in the jubilation, some attired in traditional wear, much to the delight of their aged friends.

The observance of the Month of the Elderly included a service conducted by the Central Baptist Church, visits to the homes by schoolchildren, an island tour and luncheon.

The caretakers at both homes in Anguilla are doing an excellent job in looking after the elderly, who played an important role in the community in the earlier days and who helped laid the foundation on which the island is built today.
