Preparation For John T. Memorial Cycling Race |
| Publishing date: 05.10.2007 10:14 |
As the search for the first ever Anguillian winner of the John T memorial race continues, Mr. George Lake president of the Link Cycling Club of Anguilla (LCCA) has been busy cultivating talent to do just that.
|
The aforementioned cycling club was established in 2006 with the express desire to cultivating a passion for cycling and seeing the sport grow from strength to strength. However, most important to the club is its intent on encouraging school children and youngsters to participate in cycling and helping achieve any goal they desire. The club’s aim is to have every Anguillian on a bicycle.
The club has evolved from a membership of 4 to 15 persons. Amongst the rank and file are two potentially talented youngsters who are presently training for their age group. The club has not been blind to the development of female sports in other areas. Consequently efforts are afoot to train two young promising female for upcoming competitions.
Ever community conscious, the club has several outreach programs to aid in community development. However, these plans are on hold as more members and finances are dearly needed. If more cycling clubs are formed throughout the island, and if the Cycling Association encourages more collaborative efforts, then more can be achieved in Anguilla. One such community-oriented project is the “EXPLORE ANGUILLA ON YOUR BICYCLE”. Persons from all across the island have been engaging in a scenic ride through the western section of Anguilla on Saturday mornings commencing at 5:00 am at the roundabout at the Webster’s Park.
The LCCA is in the process of organizing training sessions for youngsters in high school so they can continue the much beloved sport of cycling.
These sessions are focused on:
a) Mental and physical preparation
b) Safety on the bike
c) Usage of our streets
d) Bike handling
e) Bike adjustment
f) Posture and formation on the bike
g) Discipline.
The LCCA is the dominant cycling club on the island. Recently, members of the club participated in a three-stage race in Guyana against top quality opponents and garnered a third place. This has motivated LCCA to extend the field of competition so the local skill level can be further enhanced.
Listed below are the goals, aim, and mission of the Link Cycling Club of Anguilla:
